With so many restaurants and cafes offering food delivery in the UK, it might be difficult to pick the right one. This is where reviews and ratings become really important to make sure your business stands out from the crowd and customers choose you over the next restaurant down the road. London is especially crowded when it comes to food delivery services.
All sorts of cuisines and types of food are present since the city itself is a clash of cultures and nationalities. It comes as no surprise that even in London the most popular type of takeaway food is Indian. Some say that a chicken tikka masala has become a classic British dish.
However when it comes to searches made in the Internet then Fish and Chips tops the list with 201,000 hits every month followed by Chinese food in a solid second place with 165,000 and Indian at 90,500. All others are far behind these numbers even pizza, kebabs, and burgers aren’t even close to this. There is also a geographical divide on what type of food Britain loves the most. For example in Birmingham it is pizza, Leeds loves fish and chips and Glasgow fancies an Indian curry over anything else. As a nation that is on an island there is no surprise that a dish like fish and chips can top this list since you are never far away from the seaside where fish and chips takeaways and shops are in abundance.
A consumer survey that was done by YouGov shows a different story with Chinese food topping the list. 25% of people that completed the survey said that they preferred to order a Chinese takeaway, 17% said it is Indian and 16% voted for fish and chips. Pizza, Thai, kebabs, burgers, chicken and the rest were quite far behind with single-digit numbers. It also showed an interesting correlation between age and the type of food people love. Seems like that fish and chips is favored mostly by the older generation. When youngsters prefer pizza.
Takeaway and restaurant reviews is what counts when it comes to selecting the best food takeaway business in the UK. For example, Just Eat does it’s annual Restaurant Awards and in 2023 the top takeaways is in the North of the country with Munchies in Sheffield claiming the top spot this year. It’s a place serving burgers, wraps ,fries and more. Including a good selection of veggie dishes too.
The awards are typically with celebrity guests and this year was no exception with the likes of Fred Sirieix, Andi Oliver and Gok Wan amongst them as well as Tik Tok star Poppy O’Toole and many others. In central London the top spot went to Chilli Tuk Tuk, an Indian food takeaway in North Finchley.
Consumers would mostly pick their takeaways based on reviews, so having a solid five star review is really important. Another rating that is probably even more important is Food Hygiene score which is issued by Foods Standards Agency. The ratings there range from 0 to 5. These scores are awarded after an inspector visits a restaurant or takeaway business. Scores are a bit different in Scotland where it is typically just a pass or a fail result.
Food delivery websites have become a good place for reviews because they are left by real people ordering food from the place as opposed to any other restaurant and food reviews website where practically anybody can leave a comment including a local competitor. A typical takeaway review would consist of two parts.
A rating for a delivery service where people would rate the quality and service that they received. Sometimes this doesn’t represent the restaurant as they might outsource this service, but ultimately it is they who are responsible for it. The second and most important bit is the quality of food – this is plain simple since we all know how a good quality meal should taste like.
