Chocolate gravy is one of those quick little tasty foods created by very inventive people and resourceful cooks many generations ago. This is one of the mouth-watering dishes that like everyone. Go ahead for the best chocolate gravy recipe.

The history of the origin of this dish is a bit mysterious. There doesn’t seem to be a detailed history to point out, other than that it likely comes from the southern United States, specifically the Ozark and Appalachian regions.

It is served throughout the region for both breakfast and dessert. Use to garnish buttermilk cookies, loose cakes, strawberries, and even sweet rolls; it’s a crowd-pleaser.

What is Chocolate Gravy?

The words “chocolate” and “gravy” may seem like a strange combination, but not all “gravy” is made up of meat fat and is served with mashed potatoes and roasted beef. Preferably, the term “gravy” is used to denote any thick roux gravy prepared in a skillet. The gravy can be salty or sweet.

Furthermore, it is a variety of gravy made from fat, flour, cocoa powder, and varying amounts of sugar. This type is most common in the Southern part of U.S. cuisine and is often served as a Sunday morning dish with fresh cookies in the Appalachian and Ozark Mountain areas.

Ingredients Used to Make

Milk is commonly used as a liquid in chocolate gravy recipes, while some recipes use water. Some recipes created in Eastern Oklahoma use more sugar, and the fat comes from using butter after the gravy is complete, making it more as a hot chocolate pudding served over cookies.

How to Make Chocolate Gravy?

Traditionally, a roux is prepared with fat and flour before adding the milk during making the gravy. However, some people use cornstarch instead of flour. To make this dish, mix all the dry ingredients first, slowly add the milk and then stir until cooked. When a thick, creamy consistency is achieved, add the butter and vanilla.

Other ingredients, such as crumbled bacon, are usually added later towards the end of preparation.

Serving Tips

The best idea is to serve the gravy with homemade biscuits, butter cookies, or any other cookies and cake you like.
